Project Summary
The base contract deliverables of this project included but were not limited to K2CG performing an extensive and complex rehabilitation of the bell tower, supporting wood columns, refurbishment of the existing metal urns and misc. exposed wood components. New gold leaf was applied on the dome and the flat seam metal roofs were replaced with new lead coated copper panels.  Additionally, all of the wall cladding around the tower as well as the ornamental wood consoles were replaced in kind.  During the project, the Government issued a supplement work order that called for a large portion of the building’s slate roof, flat roofs and internal guttering system to be replaced as well as the repair and replacement of the exterior wood fascia and cornices throughout the facility.

Challenges

  • Maintaining the facility open to the public during the entire period of construction
  • Working with a very aggressive schedule to ensure on time completion and in preparation for commencement address by Sen. John McCain
  • Site safety and general hazard analysis and mitigation
  • Ensuring compliance with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)
  • Limited laydown and staging area
  • Maintaining an extensive scaffolding/monoflex system
